Transcript of meeting held in July 1973

49 Parslow Street,
Malvern, 3144
10/7/73

Dear Alan,

Enclosed please find a copy of my interpretation of the results of the meeting held at Lionel's on Sunday last.
The report has been written in a very "off key" manner.
It has been purposefully done in that way. It has been suggested that we all have had enough of everything being done according to "THE BOOK". At this stage – and hopefully in the future the proposed organisation will not be one that requires a militaristic approach. The proposed organisation is for ex-Apexians and their families to enjoy.
Hope to see you on Sunday 19th,

Yours in Apex,
David Saunders,

P.S. This typewriter is a little more efficient – and I am a little more sober – than was used for the rest of the report!!

Dear Alan,

An informal meeting was held at the home of Lionel Mussell, 50 Venice Street, Mornington, on the afternoon of July 8th, 1973.
The aim of the meeting was to consider the formation of an organisation of ex-Apexians.
Present at the meeting were:- Lionel and his family;- Kevin Frazer and his family; Alan Padgham and his family; David Saunders and his wife. David Cotton and his family attended to observe the meeting.
Apologies were made by Neil Hookey; Alan Kinder; Kevin Morrish and Barry Preston (per Barry's son Tony).
Those present enjoyed a barbecue lunch – which demonstrated various culinary skills. Vi Mussell backed up the barbecue with an excellent table of salads. Lionel's refrigerator was well stocked and his wine cellar was amply full. Those there for the afternoon sampled, very congenially, the results of the barbecue, table, refrigerator and cellar.
The meeting – of the men present – was an exploratory one. Discussion was open and frank. No hard guidelines were stipulated. The feeling was that, should an organisation be formed, it must not be a hard-binding one on its members. Due to the geographical placement of potential members, a regular meeting place was decided against.
Those at the meeting felt that any organisation formed should be basically a social fellowship club to keep alive and vitally strong the friendships formed by members during their Apex years.
Family involvement in any organisation formed was considered to be of paramount importance. Whilst the member of the suggested organisation would be an ex-Apexian, it was hoped that the wife and children of the member would become involved with the organisation.
With family involvement in mind, it was felt that possibly six meetings a year should be held and that those meetings be held at weekends. The meeting could consist of a picnic; a barbecue; a factory tour; a farm visit; a dinner dance; etc.. No formal meeting place, time nor frequency is envisaged.
A major ideal of the organisation formed would be a willingness to assist the Association of Apex Clubs – or affiliated bodies – at any level.
No name was chosen for the proposed organisation. Those present felt that the name required considerable analysis. The name must be dignified and unique. It should be verbally incorruptible and acceptable throughout all World Council members. Those present decided to consider, and list, possible names for the proposed organisation.
It was decided at the meeting to elect an interim group to investigate and establish the proposed organisation. The committee proposed was a President, a Secretary (nominated by the President) and four members. It was envisaged that, at this stage, the Secretary would also act as Treasurer. A vote was taken and Lionel was elected as President. He chose Kevin Frazer as his Secretary. The four others elected to the committee were Neil Hookey; Alan Padgham, David Saunders and Alan Kinder.
It was fully realised by all present – that the proposed office bearers were purely nominated to act as an exploratory committee evaluating the possibility of forming the proposed organisation.
Alan Padgham was asked to contact various Apex Clubs and inform them of the potential organisation.
The committee felt that there may be a small fee on members to cover administrative costs. However, it was hoped that this be kept to a minimum by mailing information through channels available to Apex.
The committee agreed that membership of the proposed organisation should be automatically open to:
       (i)  Any Apexian promoted to a Life office.
(ii) Any Apexian who retires from Apex at forty years of age.
(iii) Any ex-Apexian approved by the committee of the proposed organisation.
The meeting closed on a good note of fellowship and the hope of success of the proposed organisation.
It was agreed that the next meeting should be a barbecue, held at the home of David Saunders' parents, 75 Boundary Road, Mount Eliza. That meeting will take place from twelve noon on Sunday., August 19th, 1973. It will be a bring your own food and other requirements day. All interested people are welcome. Notify Kevin Frazer (735 1675) of the numbers you expect to have there. This report constitutes an invitation.
